Jango User guide - Manage Pages/Asset Manager

The Jango Asset Manager add-on is both a stand alone and an integrated application within Jango. Asset Manager enables you to manage site assets such as pictures, sounds, movies, Flash elements, Plug-ins, internal links and many others.

As the name implies, Asset Manager is designed to manage website assets, such as media files, internal links and plug-ins. Asset Manager also helps overcome some of the difficulties experienced by novice users because a lot of the technical requirements of placing media files into a web page are handled automatically.

Asset Manager will recognise and manage over 40 different media formats. The major ones include image formats including JPEG, GIF & PNG, movie formats including Apple Quicktime and MPEG, audio formats including AIFF and WAV, Flash and Shockwave

Modes:

Asset Manager has four operating modes which include:

Media: This is the default page that loads with the Asset Manager. This allows for the code to be displayed for items such as image files and flash files.

Pages: The location of every page inside Jango can be determined here. There is a search function that will search the entire site and return any results that match. On the left, the menu structure of the site is shown. To create custom pages go to the Pages section. By clicking on one of these will display the location to the page which can be used to link it from other pages.

Image Collections: This can be used to generate code that will allow for image collections to be shown on the site. How to create an image collection can be found in the Image Collection section

Plugins: Jango comes with plugins such as a calendar and download plugin. The calendar plugin can be seen by default on the home page when Jango is initially installed. The Asset Manager can be used to generate the code to allow for a calendar to be placed inside any page

Mode 1 - Media

Asset Manager will open a pop-up window so you must make sure you do not have pop-up blocking turned on in your browser. Once open, you will see a screen with a large blank area at the top where the images will draw and a small set of files and buttons at the bottom where you can mange your assets. The default screen shows the Media mode.

The form above shows the available categories in a tree view on the left and management on the right which are:

Search: Search for an item on your website. By Leaving the field blank it will do a search for all categories. If you check one of the available categories on the right it will search specifically within that category.

Create: Create a new category by entering a name for it and click 'Create'

Rename: Change the name of any of the categories by checking the category then type the new name in the field and click 'Rename'

Move & Delete: Move allows you to move images which are checked (single or multiple) from one category to another. Delete allows you to delete any image (single or multiple) or category that is checked. Deleting a category will also delete any images below it.

Browse/Upload: This field allows you to browse for items on your local computer and upload them into the Asset Manager to be used on your web site. If you have ImageMagick installed, when you upload an image a preview thumbnail will be automatically created for display. If you do not have ImageMagick installed, you will only see an icon.

The main purpose of using the Asset Manager is not only to organise the media files of your site, but to allow even the most inexperienced web designer to use the exact code needed for images, movies Flash files etc.

Viewing Code

Select the code. For images, the code can be viewed by clicking the <--> icon on the lower left of the picture preview.

What to do with the code. The code can be used in a variety of sections. For example if an Administrator would like to create an article for the front page, the Asset Manager can be used to determine the URL needed to insert a calendar or other item into the article. By using the HTML editor in 'source view' mode, you can copy and paste the code anywhere within that article.

Mode 2 - Pages

The "Pages" mode of the Asset Manager allows you to search for a particular page within the site, and obtain the correct link to where that page is located. This helps to maintain continuity throughout your site by linking various sections together.

All available pages are shown in a tree view structure. Navigate through this menu structure to find the page you would like to link it to.
Click on the name of the page and the link for that page will appear in the right hand side of the screen.

If you already know the name of the page you would like to link to, it may be easier to use the search form on the right hand side of the screen to find your page.
Type in the name of your page and click the search button. The matching page will return for you to select the correct page and receive the code link as pictured above.
When the code is displayed, simply copy and paste this link into the area of Jango that you wish to use it. Be sure to update the "Place Text Here" part of the code with your own display name for the hyperlink.
